By train, on foot, and road‑tripping in a grey sedan, writer Michelle van der Burg takes you along the historic Hudson River. A journey that begins at the southern tip of Manhattan’s concrete jungle and ends deep in the wilderness of the Adirondack Mountains. There, on the slopes of Mount Marcy, New York’s highest peak, lies a small, hidden lake: the source of the Hudson. But will she manage to reach it?
From the moment you open the book, you travel along the cool water that has carved its way through rocks and valleys over thousands of years. The Hudson inspired painters, writers, and statesmen, and drew adventurers, industrialists, and romantics alike. This author follows in their footsteps along misty shores, small villages, stately mansions, and rugged mountain ridges, while confronting her own fears, including her fear of heights.
A compelling story, full of personal encounters, old tales, and local anecdotes, offering readers a fresh perspective on New York’s often forgotten hinterland and its most famous waterway.
