Lisa falls in love with Tom. She is drawn to his charm and declarations of love. But as their relationship deepens, she finds herself entangled in a maze of contradictions in Tom’s character. In public, he is courteous, funny, and charming. In private, he argues about everything that affects their lives, determined to get his way.

Although Lisa doesn’t shy away from confrontation in the early stages of their relationship and often puts Tom in his place, her world gradually begins to shrink. Tom’s manipulations are so subtle that she ignores every sign of resistance, giving him more and more space to tighten his grip on her mental freedom. She also becomes entangled in her sincerity toward family and friends who idolize Tom.

But He Can Also Be So Sweet is the story of a woman fighting for the impossible: a relationship of equals with an emotionally unstable man who exhibits all the signs of narcissistic personality disorder. It tells of her struggle to find a way out of the harmful situation she and her children have become deeply embedded in. But taking the step to leave this suffocating marriage is so difficult that Lisa retreats into a world of self-deception and lies—toward herself and those around her.

When a psychologist, and later a doctor treating one of her children, begin to ask critical questions about her family life, she becomes aware of the chaos surrounding her—of the guilt she carries for dragging her children into the illusion that she could save the relationship with their father, that she could change him. She realizes that staying with him means sinking even deeper into a swamp of misunderstanding and pain. After fifteen years, she finally devises a plan to break free from this destructive bond.

This book is about how hard it is to break away from a toxic relationship. About the inner battle required to walk a path that initially seems impassable. It is about discovering the strength within yourself to choose freedom. A story that shows there is always a choice—and how much richness lies in following your heart.
