Spores beyond the End Times
About the author
Frank van Dongen is evolutionary biologist and author of the four-part novel Discovery of Man. Three years after the publication of the Thousand Islands Experiment, part 1 of Discovery of Man, the popularity of the novels continues to grow. Many readers, young and old, say that their view of society and our future has changed after reading Discovery of Man, that they are going to organize their lives
differently, and spend less time on social media and gaming.
I started writing the novel at the end of 2013. The reason was the realization that the development of artificial intelligence (AI) is going to fundamentally change our lives. In a thought experiment I wanted to investigate what the next two hundred years might look like if we continue to strive for eternal technological and economic
growth, if our population and consumption continue to increase, if we become increasingly dependent on online technology and AI.

Short Synopsis of Series
Jack Newman finally found his identical twin brother Redmond just before his death on a distant planet from the thousand islands experiment. While the Alpha civilisation fights the Feind, Redmond gives the a-mortal Jack the comprehensive task of ensuring that his tribe of IGD clones survives the end of time by crossing over to the next universe. To find out if this is even possible, Jack must make contact with the technologically far more advanced Alpha civilisation. Why did they help humanity, and what are their long-term goals and plans? And what danger does the reborn civilisation pose, the one that once caused the machine plague, narrowly defeated by a unholy alliance between the Alpha civilisation and the Feind? Finally, Jack discovers who created him as an IGD clone and for what purpose. He has now lived for centuries and is trying to unite his last surviving kind to achieve the seemingly impossible. Who will survive the End Times?
