Frank van Dongen is evolutionary biologist and author of the four-part novel Discovery of Man. Three years after the publication of the Thousand Islands Experiment, part 1 of Discovery of Man, the popularity of the novels continues to grow. Many readers, young and old, say that their view of society and our future has changed after reading Discovery of Man, that they are going to organize their lives
differently, and spend less time on social media and gaming.
I started writing the novel at the end of 2013. The reason was the realization that the development of artificial intelligence (AI) is going to fundamentally change our lives. In a thought experiment I wanted to investigate what the next two hundred years might look like if we continue to strive for eternal technological and economic
growth, if our population and consumption continue to increase, if we become increasingly dependent on online technology and AI.

Short Synopsis of Series
End of the 21st century. Jack Newman is seen as an enemy of humanity. The a-mortality programme he helped develop is only affordable for the elite and has caused the world to be ravaged by revolutions and civil wars. The torn society is unable to resist when Earth is hit by an invasion of the Feind, an aggressive alien army feared by Jack. Can Jack count on the Alpha civilisation now that billions of people have died? Although all seems lost, Jack tries to find his brother Redmond and in doing so discovers the true intentions behind the thousand islands experiment and whether humanity still has a future.
