The Thousand Island Experiment
About the author
Frank van Dongen is evolutionary biologist and author of the four-part novel Discovery of Man. Three years after the publication of the Thousand Islands Experiment, part 1 of Discovery of Man, the popularity of the novels continues to grow. Many readers, young and old, say that their view of society and our future has changed after reading Discovery of Man, that they are going to organize their lives
differently, and spend less time on social media and gaming.
I started writing the novel at the end of 2013. The reason was the realization that the development of artificial intelligence (AI) is going to fundamentally change our lives. In a thought experiment I wanted to investigate what the next two hundred years might look like if we continue to strive for eternal technological and economic
growth, if our population and consumption continue to increase, if we become increasingly dependent on online technology and AI.

Short Synopsis of Series
Halfway through the 21st century, the world is over-populated and work has largely been taken over by algorithms, machines and robotised factories. The unemployed world population leads a secluded existence, addicted to the virtual world. Jack Newman grows up in a residential community for former drug addicts. The virtual world does not appeal to him – he prefers to be outdoors. That changes when he discovers Alpha War, in which an alien invasion must be averted. Jack does everything he can to win this infamous game. But is it really just a game, or is there more to it? And what about his twin brother Redmond, whose existence is denied by everyone and everything? What is his connection to the Thousand Islands experiment, once started by the shadowy Alpha civilisation? Jack sets out to investigate. The truth turns out to be more complex than he could ever have imagined.
