Windows to Our Children

Violet Oaklander (April 18, 1927 – September 21, 2021) was a child and adolescent therapist known for her method of integrating Gestalt Therapy theory and practice with play therapy. Oaklander was the author of the books Windows to Our Children: A Gestalt Therapy Approach to Children and Adolescents (The Gestalt Journal Press, 1978; published in 16 languages) and Hidden Treasure: A Map to the Child's Inner Self (Routledge, 2006; published in 8 languages), as well as several journal articles, book chapters, and audio and video recordings on psychotherapeutic work with children.[1] Oaklander had a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology, a Master of Arts in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling, a Master of Science in Special Education with emotionally disturbed children, and was a certified Gestalt therapist.

In this time of great upheaval and stress caused by the worldwide pandemic and many other economic, political and environmental challenges, Dr. Violet Oaklander's unique model of psychotherapy for children and adolescents is more timely and urgently needed than ever. Her seminal book, Windows to Our Children, first published over 40 years ago, has changed the lives of thousands of mental health professionals and millions of their clients across the U.S. and around the world.

'I realize that I learned about working with children from children, including myself as a child! This seems so obvious to me now, almost too elementary to write. Children are our finest teachers. They already know how to grow, how to develop, how to learn, how to expand and discover, how to feel, laugh and cry and get mad, what is right for them and what is not right for them, what they need. They already know how to love and be joyful and to live life to its fullest, to work and to be strong and full of energy. All they (and the children within us) need is the space to do it.' - Violet Oaklander, Ph.D.

When originally published, this book filled a void in child therapy literature. Counselors and therapists, in schools, mental health centers and private practice, embraced this book. It is the largest selling book on the subject in the world. This edition includes over 300 pages of methods, materials, and techniques for working with children and adolescents. Also included are session transcripts, case examples and discussions.
